What is Express Mode for Apple Pay?

Express Travel Card or Express Transit as Apple like to call it, takes the frustration of trying to use your iPhone or Apple Watch as a contactless payments on the London Underground and other opted in transit systems.

This means that you won’t need to get the payment card ready using Face ID our Touch ID when going through the ticket barriers, saving time and a lot of frustration.

It also allows you to use your Apple Pay card when your iphone has died for upto 5 hours, although this does require you to have an iPhone XS or later, or Apple Watch Series 4 or later.

What iPhone do I need to use Express Transit?

In order to use Express Transit on your iPhone, you will need an iPhone 6s or newer.

If you wish to use the system when the battery has died, you will need the iPhone XS or above.

What Apple Watch do I need to use Express Transit?

In order to use Express Transit on your Apple Watch, you will need an Apple Watch Series 4 or later.

You can also use the battery depleted Express Transit function on these Apple Watch devices.

How do I set up Express Transit on my iPhone?

Its easy to set up Express Transit on your iPhone, follow these simple instructions:

1. Go to SETTINGS
2. Scroll to WALLET & APPLE PAY and select.
3. Scroll to TRAVEL CARDS and where it says None, select.
4. Choose which card you want to use with Express Travel Card.

Its really easy to set up Express Transit on your Apple Watch, please follow these simple instructions:

1. Go to the APPLE WATCH APP.
2. Scroll down to WALLET & APPLE PAY
3. Scroll to TRAVEL CARDS and where it says NONE, select.
4. Choose which card you want to use with Express Travel Card.

How do I change which card is the default for Express Transit?

Its a similar process for both the iPhone and the Apple watch, here are the instructions:

1. Go to the APPLE WATCH APP or SETTINGS (for iPhone)
2. Go to WALLET & APPLE PAY
3. Scroll to TRAVEL CARDS and select.
4. Choose which card you want as your Default.

What is Express Transit in Apple Pay?

Introduced in iOS 12.3, Apple Pay Express Transit feature enables you to use your iPhone and/or Apple Watch on the contactless system on the London Underground.

Apple Pay users simply hold their devices on the contactless terminal and the system works without initiating Face ID or Touch ID.

On the Apple Watch it allows you to use the transit system without having to double press the side button.

What transit systems can I use with Express Transit?

Only a few transit systems accept Express Transit at the moment, but the ones signed up are:

1. London Underground (TfL)
2. Sucia Cards in Japan
3. TriMet in Portland
4. New York’s MTA
5. Transit System in Bejing
6. Transit System in Shanghai
